Oregon Court Records
Access to records on the Oregon court website provides visitors with a clear picture of the state's judicial structure and how the judicial system operates. Oregon's judicial structure comprises locally funded or hybrid courts, such as the Municipal and Tax Courts, trial courts (Circuit and Tax Courts), and appellate courts (the Court of Appeals and the state Supreme Court). The Oregon Supreme Court is the state's Apex judicial institution and has the final say on any disputed legal decision within the state's judiciary; together with the Court of Appeals, it reviews the lower courts' judgments when necessary.
By comparison, the Circuit Courts have authority over all civil and criminal trials, but handle cases beyond the jurisdiction of the lower courts. The Oregon Tax Courts oversee cases related to the state's tax laws. Local courts have limited authority over civil, criminal, and traffic cases.
Under Section 7.130 of the Oregon Revised Statutes and the Oregon Uniform Trial Court Rules (UTCR), interested parties can access court records that do not have statutory exemptions or restraining judicial orders. Likewise, state laws do not permit public access to information that breaches privacy laws. However, while the Oregon court records website provides access to public judicial information, visitors should note that it is not an official source and does not offer legal advice.
